, Introduction
Want to get the full experience on a city’s darkest past? By visiting one of the Dungeons, visitors
go on an immersive journey through the history of the city of their choice. Focussing on the
Amsterdam Dungeon, visitors can take a journey of five hundred years of history of the Dutch
capital. However, the Amsterdam Dungeon is now seen as a place for tourists, an attraction for
families and worst of all: seen as a fairly flat ‘haunted house’. This vision needs to be changed
and therefore the following research question is set beforehand:
Can digital media play a role in enhancing the experience you gain during a visit to the
Amsterdam Dungeon? How could we use digital media to increase referral (recommendation)
among friends?
Societal relevance
Nowadays, the Amsterdam Dungeon has an image of a tourist attraction and next to that it is
mostly seen as an attraction for families. In other words, they want to get rid of this silly image
that they got and attract more people of a younger age. This research can shed a light on what the
motivations are for younger people in the age of sixteen to twenty years to visit the Amsterdam
Dungeon or not. These motivations can also be applied to other attractions in Amsterdam that
want to get rid of the “touristy” image that they got, and can maybe even be applied to the other
Dungeons worldwide. Additionally, this research is also looking for the possibilities of
enhancing digital media inside the Dungeon experience, so this knowledge can maybe be
transferred to the other Dungeons as well.
