CYTOPATHOGENIC EFFECT
PRINCIPLE OF CPE
The aim of this experiment is to determine the difference between the effects of 5 different viruses on specific
cell types, depending on the structural changes a virus has on its host cell. The examination of healthy as well
as infected cells is important to fully understand the effects.
This effect is called “the cytopathogenic effect” or CPE. By utilizing a light microscope and identifying (possible)
structural changes, is it possible to assess if a virus is present in a cell population (or not) by comparing healthy
cells with infected cells.

o Describes structural changes in a host cell by a viral infection
- Why are we checking the effects and not the cells themselves?
o Size of the viruses is too small (nm)
5 DIFFERENT VIRUSES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS
1) RSV
2) HSV type II
3) Calicivirus
4) Influenza
5) Parainfluenza
No use of immersion oil (use only the blue lens)
Respiratory syncytial virus
- Airborne infection
- Inflammation of the lower respiratory system
- Causes mild cold
o eldery, prematures and young infants
- Transmission through sneezing, coughing and talking
o Through tiny drops
- Very contagious
- Typical CPE Merging of cells
o Loose cells normally
o Merging nuclei close together.
o Look first at the non infected cells
o For the report: Only cell phones for CPE

- Cold sores
