Digestive System
Definition
The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food
into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body.
Overall Function
The overall function of the digestive system is to take in food, break it down
into nutrients (a process called digestion), absorb those nutrients into the
bloodstream, and then get rid of the waste products.
Main organs and their function
Mouth: It's where digestion begins. The saliva breaks down the
chemicals in the food a bit, which helps make the food mushy and easy
to swallow.
Esophagus: A tube that carries food from mouth to stomach.
Stomach: It uses acids and enzymes to break down food further.
Small intestine: Most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients occur
here.
Large intestine: Absorbs water from the remaining indigestible food
matter and transmits the useless waste material from the body.
Diseases of the system
Acid reflux: A condition where stomach acid flows back into the
esophagus, causing heartburn and discomfort.
Ulcers: Open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or small
intestine, often causing pain and bleeding.
