Respiratory System
Definition
The respiratory system is a group of organs and tissues that work together
to help you breathe.
Overall Function
The main function of this system is to take in oxygen from the air we
breathe and expel carbon dioxide, a waste product of bodily functions,
back into the air.
Main Organs and their Functions
Nose and Mouth: These are the entry points for air into our bodies.
Trachea: Also known as the windpipe, it transports the air we breathe to
the lungs.
Lungs: These are the main organs where oxygen is taken up by our
blood and carbon dioxide is released to be exhaled.
Diaphragm: This is a muscle at the bottom of our chest that helps us to
breathe in and out.
Diseases of the System
Asthma: A chronic condition characterized by inflammation and
narrowing of the airways, causing difficulty breathing.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A group of lung
diseases, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, that cause
airflow blockage and breathing-related problems.
Pneumonia: An infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs,
which may fill with fluid or pus.
