A human activity is something people do or cause to happen for a certain purpose or for a given
beneficial result. Human activities have had a very large impact on water resources throughout
the year. Water is life. This is signified by the fact that seventy percent of earth is water. It is
therefore important in every essential human activity. Water resources provide water to cater for
needs. Human activities will therefore always have an impact on water resources everywhere in
the world. This report will focus therefore on water resources in and around Kenyatta University
located in Kiambu County and its environs.
Main types of water sources and sources
The institution is located in an urban area with a few number of water resources. The main water
resources seen in this area around the institution is streams and a river. There are two streams
and one river. The river is located in the Githurai area, which is an environ of the institution
while the two streams are located near the institution.
The two streams and the river are permanent and run through the whole year.
Human activities
The institution is located in an urban area near the country’s capital city. The prevalent human
activity in this area is trading. Several market places are located in this area and are a business
hub with diverse trading activities experienced in this area. There are several supermarkets and
also there are small kiosks. Car washing activities also take place.
Small scale farming is also done in this institution and its environs. Crops such as kales, spinach,
arrowroots, and sugarcane and food crops such as bananas are farmed in this area.
Small-scale irrigation is also done in this area. Irrigation is done for the purposes of farming of
flowers for commercial purposes
The area is an urban area and several construction activities are witnessed in this area.
A coffee industry is also present in this area meaning that industrialization is also a human
activity in the area.
Domestic activities are also practiced in this area. These include household chores
Presence of life
The stream in the area behind the institution holds life in the form of presence of water hyacinth
and presence of aquatic life such as a variety of fish
, Quality and quantity of water
The water resources in the area possessed poor water quality. This is due to presence of
pollutants from human activities and also from the NKG coffee present in the area around the
institution.
The river and stream are not seasonal but the quantity of water is very low and can only serve
limited purposes
EVIDENCE OF WATER POLLUTION IN THE RESOURCES
Water pollution is the contamination of water resources. It is any chemical, physical or biological
change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or
lives in. It occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without
adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution affects plants and organisms
living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual
species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.
Water pollution is a major global problem which has been suggested as the leading worldwide
cause of deaths worldwide. Water is typically referred to as polluted when it is impaired by
anthropogenic contaminants and either does not support a human use, such as drinking water, or
undergoes a marked shift in its ability to support its constituent biotic communities such as
drinking water
Sources of water pollution include sewage discharges and cumulative effect of small amounts of
contaminants gathered from a large area. The specific contaminants leading to pollution in water
include a wide spectrum of chemicals, pathogens and physical or sensory changes such as
elevated temperature may be naturally occurring.
Living organisms such as fish can be used to detect water pollution. Changes in their behavior or
growth show us that the water is polluted.
Evidence
Polythene bags were seen as evidence of people polluting this water resources. Sewage effluent
is also present. Market residue, construction materials, carwash effluent are also other evidences
of water pollution
