How did this early state come to an end? - ANSWER: The early state ended with
inhabitants being created to inhabit the earth. Gods and stars for the heavens, fish
for the seas, beasts for land

How does Ovid describe the creation of the cosmos? - ANSWER: Ovid describes the
creation of the cosmos as chaotic and the creator separating earth from heaven,
land from sea. Ovid credits a primordial God with the creation of cosmos. Starting
from chaos where everything was mingled he separated the elements and by setting
boundaries he eventually created a peaceful cosmos. Also when introducing the
metamorphoses, he does not invoke the muses, showing that he is going to use his
mind and challenge the way that myth had been written in the past (Homer/Virgil)

How were humans created? - ANSWER: Finally the creator created humans to rule
the land and to offer sacrifice to the gods.Ovid gives us two versions regarding
human creation; God creating man from divine seed - Prometheus was the creator of
man by mixing earth and water. In the prometheus version, although mud is kind of
gross, it's significant since it had recently been part of the sky (heaven). Man was
also made in the shape of the Gods.

What are the Four Ages of Man? What characterizes each age? - ANSWER: Golden:
Everyone behaves themselves so there is no need for laws or penalties, there is no
war, the Earth produces plenty of food, and there is no over farming. (Trust, morals,
fruitfulness) Kronos (Saturn) is ruling. Man always dies peacefully (no sickness) and
death is just like going to sleep, basically when they choose after living a long life

Silver: Jupiter introduces the seasons and man learns how to farm. (Work for a living)
Kronos is banished and Jupiter (Jove) is the ruler. People remain infants for an
inordinately long amount of time and then quickly age and die. They have become
very self serving

Bronze: Man fought in wars but still respected the gods. (First wars, slight morality)

Iron: Countries are divided, man is greedy for natural minerals, families fight each
other, there is no respect for the gods, and Astraea flees (No sacred/worship of the
gods, family ties led to bloodshed) Mining (iron and gold) led to conflicts;all familial
ties were severely threatened, modesty replaced by evil and greed. Astrea the
goddess of justice leaves the earth during this period

What threatened Jupiter's order? - ANSWER: People were no longer worshiping or
respecting the gods, possibly because they no longer feared or believed in them. The

, Giants piled up mountains trying to reach Mt. Olympus but Jove, using thunderbolts
crushed their rebellion and blood soaked Earth produced a new race of men who
also despised Gods. This new race of men were the object of Jove's wrath because of
their impiety, greediness and blood lust.

Which human did Jupiter identify as particularly responsible for the viciousness of
humanity? - ANSWER: Zeus (aka. Jupiter/Jove) identified Lycaon for being
responsible for the viciousness of humanity. Zeus was especially mad at Lycaon since
he tried to disguise an offering of skin and bone in fat to fool Zeus, keeping the
typically sacrificed "good" meat to himself (ie tried to trick Zeus). However,
everywhere he went in disguise treated him poorly. Lycaon also planned to attempt
to murder Zeus in his sleep. Lycaon had attempted to trick Jupiter and him feed him
human flesh.

What did Jupiter do to this Lycaon? - ANSWER: Because of Lycaon's disrespect and
actions, Zeus turned him into a wolf/beast and destroyed his home and cast him into
the wilderness

How did he announce his actions? - ANSWER: Zeus called a council of the gods and
announced his actions by telling the world:
"Thus fell one house, but not one house alone
deserved to perish; over all the earth
ferocious deeds prevail,—all men conspire
in evil. Let them therefore feel the weight
of dreadful penalties so justly earned,
for such hath my unchanging will ordained."

How else did Jupiter punish humanity for its wickedness? - ANSWER: Zeus began to
punish humanity through lightning, then he remembered when the sea and earth
met(afraid of burning down the universe with his thunderbolts). So he sent a
flood(with the help of his brother Neptune) to destroy everything. Created Pandora's
box (?)

Who survived? - ANSWER: Deucalion (prometheus son.. coincidence?) and Pyrrha.

How did Deucalion and Pyrrha repopulate the earth? - ANSWER: Following the
advice of the oracles, they began to repopulate the earth by "throwing the bones of
their great mother(Earth) behind their backs." Essentially meaning that they threw
stones behind their backs which morphed into humans. Also the ones thrown by
Deucalion became men, and the ones by Pyrrha became women. This is why humans
are so hard-hearted. Animals were also repopulated by appearing from the ground
and warmed by the sun

What beast did Apollo slay? How was Apollo punished for boasting? What was the
significance of Daphne's transformation into a tree? - ANSWER: a. The Python
