● Africa was vulnerable to the slave trade because of sailing routes and availability of
people
● European powers eventually turned to African labor because of new colonies and a
reduced native population
● Enslaved Africans mostly come from West Africa (Senegal River to Angola)
● Middle Passage is a horrible 3 part voyage
● Enslaved people were hand selected by Europeans and branded, half survived the
death march to the forts along the west coast of Africa(1,000 miles away)
● 10-16 million Africans were forcibly shipped
● Enslaved were chained together and crammed onboard ships
What We Learned:
Europeans would steal Africans and cram them onto ships. If they died they would be
dumped off the ship they were put in harsh conditions and some were killed for
insurance money.
