Basic research.
• This is the research conducted for the sake of
generating and expanding knowledge.
• Such a research attempts to explain and describe
the status of things.
• It does not focus on the application of the new
knowledge to a specific problem or situation.
• However knowledge gained can be used to refine
existing theories
,Applied research.
• Thais is the research conducted so that knowledge
obtained can be used to solve a specific problem.
• It is directed toward a defined objective of target
aimed at finding solutions to real life problems.
• It is based on the need for specific fact and findings
with policy implications.
• For example a hospital may commission a survey of
population preferences for a certain hospital services in
order to increase or decrease the demand for those
services.
, Action research.
• Action research is conducted with the primary intention of
solving a specific, immediate and concrete problem in a
local setting. For example a business firm would investigate
ways of increasing sales in a given geographical area.
• Action research is not concerned with whether the results
are generalized to any other setting since it major goal is to
seek a solution to a given problem.
• Action research is limited in its contribution to theory but it
is useful because it provides answers to problems that
cannot wait for theoretical solutions .
