Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge

Unit 1 of this course book is clearly structured with articles, informal activities and
reports that students can work independently on. The setup of this unit is very logical
as well as appropriate for advanced level students. However, the materials get
progressively more difficult from the beginning with learning more in dept grammar
about continuous verb forms and then moving on to more difficult language activities
and ending in writing a report to check your language skills. The four skills are also
clearly covered in this course book which follows a rather logical structure in building
up from the previous activity to the next. This unit also makes use of practice,
recycling and revision. There are variety of revision exercises to check students
understanding of global living. The teacher’s guide is not mentioned in this unit.
This unit makes use of individual work as well as paired work and exercises for
students to work independently on. Materials such as the intriguing articles, attractive
photographs and interesting facts are clearly presented in this unit without it working
cluttered and untidy. Fortunately, there is a good balance between all four skills and
language areas. However, I would have liked more speaking and pronunciation
exercises. There are many activities focusing on language skills and the grammar
exercise on continuous verbs tenses is appropriate for these advanced level students.
The reading and listening activities are applicable to global living and nothing that
would be offensive to diverse people.
This unit provides a variety of practice activities and group discussions, but it does not
mention any types of test for students. I don’t really know the financial situation of the
student or the school as it is not mentioned anywhere in this unit, so I can not tell if
this book is affordable or not. However, it will be expensive if we must print these has
worksheets for students because of the image that will have to be printed in colour.
There is no use of grammar referring pages or vocabulary lists that is provided for
students according to the scope and sequence book.
In conclusion, this unit covers most of the evaluation checklist but there are a few
activities that can be added on like more speaking and pronunciation exercises.
However, in my opinion I would definitely like to use this course book as it is a well-
orchestrated and carefully designed example of a course book for advanced level
students.
