,INTRODUCTION :-
GRAM POSITIVE ( GRAM + )
• Having thick peptidoglycan layer and teichoic acid in their cell wall.
• Stained by methylene blue ( dark blue or purple ), whereas gram negative
stained by safranin ( counterstain ) as pink or red.
,EXAMPLES OF GRAM – POSITIVE
• Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Bacillus,
Actinobacteria, Enterococcus, Nocardia, Clostridium, Listeria etc
Cocci - Gram-Positive : Staphylococcus, Streptococcus
Bacillus – Gram + : Bacillus, Clostridium, Listeria, Cornyebacterium.
Bacillus spore forming ( Gram + ) : Bacillus ( Facultative anaerobes ),
Clostridia ( Obligate anaerobes )
Bacillus Non-spore forming ( Gram + ) : Listeria, Cornyebacterium
Facultative Anaerobes :- Survive with oxygen ( Respiration ) and without
oxygen ( fermentation )
Obligate Anaerobes :- Survive absence of oxygen ( fermentation )
, Staphylococcus
• Grape like clusters, most of harmless, normally resides on skin
and mucous membrane of human.
• Most of Coagulase positive ( S. aureus = S. pyogenes ),
• Coagulase Negative :-
• Staphylococcus epidermidis ( non pathogenic ) and staphylococcus
saprophyticus ( in vaginal flora ), S. capitus.
• S. aureus also catalase positive
