Course Outcomes: Through this course student should be able to
• identify different breeds of the livestock.
• use modern livestock development methods.
• evaluate importance of livestock in national economy.
• evaluate poultry management system.
• classify different types of the feed.
Theory:
Unit I
Livestock and role of livestock in national economy: basic terminology in livestock,
importance of the livestock in national economy, distribution of livestock in nation, different
livestock development scheme in India, embryo transfer technology, cloning, animal breeding
and artificial insemination in livestock.
Unit II
Breeds of livestock and poultry: important indigenous and exotic breeds of cattle, buffalo, goat,
sheep, pig and poultry, basic terminology in poultry
Unit III
Housing management of livestock: selection site for housing of the livestock, care and
management of newly born calf, heifer and cow before and after parturition, milch animal,
identification methods in livestock included branding, tagging, tattooing and castration, care and
management of sheep, goat and swine.
Unit IV
Reproduction management of livestock: reproductive system of the cow and bull, estrous
cycle in the cow, factors affecting estrous cycle of the cow, reproductive system of poultry,
brooding and methods of the brooding, Incubation and hatching of the poultry eggs, care and
management of the chicks, grower and layers
Unit V
Feeding management of livestock: proximate principles of the feeding and classification of the
feed for livestock includes thumb rule of the feeding, computation of ration for livestock, animal
nutrition management, digestive system of the cow and poultry.
Unit VI
Disease management of livestock: classification of the disease of livestock and poultry,
important disease of the livestock, important disease of the poultry, vaccination schedule in the
poultry

External body parts and handling of livestock:
To study external body parts of cow, buffalo, sheep, goat, swine and poultry
To study methods of handling and restraining of livestock
Identification and farm visit:
To study methods of identification for livestock and poultry
To Visit Dairy and Poultry farm (To study breeds and daily routine farm operations &
records)
Livestock Judging and Housing:
To study of Judging and culling of livestock and poultry
To study planning and layout of housing for different types of livestock
Livestock ration preparation:
To study computation of ration for livestock
To study formulations of concentrate mixture for livestock
Milking and incubation:
To study clean and hygienic milk production and milking methods
To study incubation and hatching of eggs
Poultry management and dairy economics:
To study debeaking, dusting and vaccination in poultry
To study economics of cattle, buffalo and poultry
