, 1-7 Assignment: From Issue to Persuasion
The first topic is whether grass-fed beef is better than grain fed. One side may argue that
grass-fed beef is not only better for the consumer it is also better for the environment. With less
total fat per serving, higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and more linoleic acid, grass fed beef is
healthier than its alternative (Consumer Reports, 2008). Another positive aspect of grass-fed
cattle is that natural grazing can be good for maintaining balanced ecosystems and can boost soil
fertility. However, on the other side of the argument one could say that grass-fed is worse for the
environment, since it takes more time to reach processing weight for grass-fed cattle, creating
more greenhouse gas than its grain fed counterpart. Also, the higher cost associated with
producing grass-fed beef trickles over to the consumer, sometimes costing as much as three
times more than conventionally raised beef (Romig, Kevin, 2013)
The second topic is whether genetically modified foods are safe. Genetically modified
foods (GMO foods) are a controversial subject, one side argues that the use of genetic
modification on plants produces a disease-drought resistant plant that requires less environmental
resources (such as food and water), requires less use of pesticides, and grows faster (Utkualp, et
al, 2016). Making an increased supply of food with less costs involved. GMO foods are
designed to be healthier and cheaper to produce than traditional foods and may help reduce
greenhouse gases. On the other side of the argument GMO foods have not been around long
enough to know what the long-term effects are. There is a risk of GMO foods triggering allergic
reactions, depending on what genes have been altered within the plant. Some fear that they
contribute to an increased risk of cancer and antibiotic resistance. There is also a fear that GMO
foods could have a negative impact on insects and other plants, impacting the environments
biodiversity.
