Acute inflammation

Acute inflammation  A physiological response to injury by living tissue.  The response is mounted by the microvasculature (meta-arterioles, capillaries, venules) INJURY INFLAMMATION HEALING PROCESS  Inflammation is dynamic. -itis implies that the disease is an inflammatory response e.g hepatitis, nephritis etc.  Pneumonitis: Viral induced inflammation of the lungs.  Pneumonia: Bacterial.  Depending on the degree of response they are divided into acute & chronic.  Inflammation is accompanied by systemic effects.  Acute inflammation is of rapid onset & the micro-organisms involved are very virulent.  It may last from a few days to weeks.  Morphologic appearance is similar regardless of the site where it occurs.  Predominant cell type is the neutrophil.  The reaction is physiological & cells respond to chemical mediators of acute inflammation. 1.
