, Airway Remodeling Discussion Topic
Over time, the continued inflammation and abnormal chemical environment of asthma cause physical
changes in the bronchi and bronchioles that are known as airway remodeling.
Compare the normal bronchiole with the bronchiole from a person who has chronic asthma. Note the
increased amount of mucus in the bronchial lumen in asthma. Look for these changes that contribute to
accumulation of mucus:
Increased number of goblet cells in the mucosa
Hypertrophy of submucosal mucus glands
Note these additional aspects of airway remodeling in asthma:
Thickened basement membrane
Mucosal layer contains many inflammatory cells
Airway smooth muscle layer is thicker due to hypertrophy and hyperplasia
Discuss how airway remodeling affects respiratory function.
