1. Question: What constitutes personal protective equipment? When
should personal protective equipment be worn? Why is personal
protective equipment important? (5 pts)
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is clothing, gear, or any other
protective device that protect and prevent injury and the spread of
infection/illness. PPE should be used anytime an individual is working
with hazardous, biological, and chemical material. PPE is critical in
ensuring the safety of individuals working with hazardous material and
protects and mitigates potential risk such as illness, injury, and death.
2. Question: As part of lab safety procedure and before beginning an
experiment, what must you do in order to be prepared to conduct
the steps of the experiment? (5 pts)
As a part of lab safety, you must ensure your hands are washed
with soap and water. No food, drink, or smoke should be present in
the area you are working in. Ensure your work area is completely
disinfected and ensure all equipment is sterile prior to conducting
the experiment.
, 3. Question: Why are there increasing levels of biological containment
procedures? What level of biological containment will be necessary to
complete the experiments in this manual? (10 points)
Pathogens are highly contagious and are constantly progressing
due to their evolution. Containment levels are essential in mitigating
the risk of the spread of these pathogens. BSL-1 is required for the
experiments in this manual since agents present minimal potential
hazard and there is no significant risk for injury, disease, or infection.
4. Question: What document should you refer to if you have questions
regarding the safety or disposal of a chemical? Where can this
document be located? (10 pts)
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provide information for the danger, safe use,
and disposal of chemicals and can be found on the eScience Labs
website.
5. Question: Explain what the presence of dark to gray colored fuzzy
colonies indicates on growth plates. (10 ps)
Dark colored fuzzy colonies typically indicate the presence of mold or
fungi. Unlike normal colonies, mold will appear at first as a white/grey
color and will eventually turn darker as time progresses due to
moisture.
