XYZ Engineering are very impressed with the new technologies that I have introduced to
them. The directors of the company have taken trips out to other companies to what
technologies & investments they would need to upgrade their business. They have become
very interested in robotic technology & what it could offer then business.
For the first criteria I will examine other businesses that use robots in the manufacturing &
assembly of their products; I will also describe the advantages & limitation of these industrial
robots by giving clear examples of where & why they are used; which’ll be presented to my
supervisor of the form of a report.
Industrial robots are manipulators that are aimed to transfer materials, parts & tools; there are
often used for duties that are very dangerous or unfitting for a human worker to accomplish.
There are many advantages for using industrial robots as for
starters, loads of robots are in the form of a robotic arm since its
mechanical nature & computerised control allows the robotic arm
to carry out continuous tasks with the consistency of being very
precise; which provides improved product quality.
With the same features from above, the mechanical nature of the
equipment & computerised control allows the industrial robots to be very efficient, which
leads them to produce far more products than human labour. Likewise, these robots can be
placed anywhere, such as from the ceiling, & this’ll leave more space on the floor for any
future plans.
As we all know, certain environments can be very hazardous for human workers as they can
inhale toxins whilst working, be at risk of losing limbs when working with machines etc. But
for industrial robots, these machines can easily work in conditions that a human simply
cannot; so the ability to work in environments that are unreceptive to humans is a huge
advantage.
For this advantage, it is only acceptable since human characteristics, such as boredom from
doing repetitive tasks don’t interfere with the functioning of a robot; for instance, a human
worker when bored will have a severe effect on the products as they’ll be low quality & the
rate of production will be lower. However, with a robot, these characteristics are completely
eradicated, therefore maintaining the high quality & efficiency.
Despite the advantages of using industrial robots, there are a few limitations as robots are
unable of creative independent thinking, cannot learn from their mistakes, they are not suited
to adapt quickly to any changes in the surroundings.
Whilst industrial robots can be very efficient, implementing them require a very high capital
cost; likewise, once purchasing these robots, the workers that’ll be managing these will need
more training & knowledge to initially set up.
To cut a long story short, the pros of industrial robots where most of them are used produce
high quality & quantity, ability to work in unwelcoming environments, & freedom from
natural human needs like food & rest. However, some limitations of robotics in areas, such as
creativity, independent thinking & making complicated decisions that lead to a projection
those humans will remain in charge of robots rather than vice versa.
