, Term 2 of 14
How do you work under pressure?
- My SHORT-TERM GOALS are to become a proficient NICU Nurse, to establish myself as a
valuable member of my healthcare team, and to become a Certified Lactation Nurse.
- My LONG-TERM GOAL is to go back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner with a focus
in Neonatology.
The job position asked for applicants with 2 years of registered nursing experience or an
extraordinary new grad, and I truly believe that I am that extraordinary new grad you are
looking for. I say this because not only do I possess superior critical thinking skills, but I am
also remarkably quick on my feet. For example, one day I was assigned to care for two
infants in the NICU. While I was taking vitals on one patient, I heard an alarm go off on my
other patient's monitor. Her sats were usually in the mid 70s but she was satting 68. I also
noticed that her heart rate was lower than usual. I stopped my task, make sure my patient
was stable, and went to check on the other patient. By the time I reached her crib, she was
satting in the 40s and her heart rate was in the 60s. I immediatly began to bag her while
another nurse administered cpr, and we were able to bring her back to stasis. Although this
was a very high stress situation, I did not allow it to affect my clinical judgement. And
because of that I was able to save one patient's life while ensuring the safety of the other.
- I work very well under pressure. I am calm in a crisis, I have quick critical thinking skills,
and I am always acutely aware of my patients and their surroundings.
- During my preceptorship in the NICU I cared for a set of 27 week old twins the whole time
I was there. They were both on mechanical ventilation and often had drops in their Oxygen
Saturation. One day, while taking vitals on a different patient, one of the twins who had just
come off of the ventilator had a drop in her oxygen saturation. Normally her oxygen sats
dropped to the low to mid 70s, but this one read 68. I also noticed that her heart rate was a
little lower than usual. I immediately stopped my task, made sure my patient was stable,
and ran over to the twin. By the time I reached her her oxygen sats were in the 40s and her
heart rate was in the 60s. I immediately bagged the patient, while another nurse initiated
CPR and we brought her back to stasis. After precepting in the NICU, I learned to be
acutely vigilant of my patients, which I know will serve me well in my career.
- When I was 16 years old I participated in Northside Hospitals summer volunteer program
where I was assigned to the high risk perinatal unit. I enjoyed my first day on the job so
much that I asked the head of the program if I could volunteer for any additional days, and
got the opportunity to work in their cancer center as well. After completing the program, I
knew that Nursing was the career path I wanted to take.
