ORIGIN OF THEATRE
Theatre is derived from the Greek word " theatron" meaning a place of seeing.
Description of theatre.
For the purpose of this course theatre will be study from three perspectives
1. Theatre as a place; where aesthetic performance take place such as musical concert, drama
production and dance performance.
2. Theatre as performances; such performance are dance, drama and music.
3. Theatre as a field of study e. g theatre art, where rudiments of theatrical enactments are
taught.
BASIC ELEMENTS OF THEATRE
1. Space: where the performance is meant to take place, it can also be refer to as the
performance space. It could be a market place, conventional stage, village spuare, school,
church.
2. The raw materials: it can also be called the script, scenario, storyline and subject matter.
3. The performers: the people who will carry out the action on stage or space.
4. Design Element: this refer to the act of embellishment apply to enhance the performance
either for better understanding or appreciation e. g costume, make-up, lightning, sounds,
scenery and properties.
5. Director: a director is a person who bring together the performers for them to perform, a
director is also a person who bring a written script to life through people acting. He/she also
make a performance to be a production. Director is an aesthetic individual who bring all the
aesthetic element in a performances.
For a director to achieve this great task, he is at liberty to appoint individuals into
different offices of responsibility. For example the director needs a production secretary
who will take down all the happening within the production happening e.g names, of the
cast members, crew members.
Blockings : they are instructions that the director gives to the actor during rehearsal.
The audience: they are the people comes into the theatre space to see the production.
N/B if they are not there, the theatre is incomplete, they are also consumers of the production.
The process of dropping who you are in real life and becoming who they want you to be in a
production is called Characterisation.
Getting back to who you are in real life is call De-charaterisation.
