PENICILLINS (B-Lactam)
Penicillin is a beta lactam Antibiotic. It is bactericidal in nature. Its MOA is binding to Penicillin
Binding Protein (PBP) such as transaminidase and prevent cross link formation between
peptidoglycan chains of the cell wall. Penicillin + bacterial autolysin works together to cause
destruction of the cell wall
Resistance can develop due to 1. Presence of B-Lactamase 2. PBP Mutation 3. Efflux Pump or 4.
Impaired Penetration.
SE include Anaphylactic Shock, Urticaria, GI Disturbances, & Increased Na and K load.
Narrow Spectrum are a DOC for Syphilis. Oxacillin, Dicloxacillin, and Nafcillin are used against MSSA.
Ampicillin, Amoxicillin are given against Pneumonia and E. Faecalis.
Clavulanic Acid + Amoxicillin = Augmentin Sulbactam + Ampicillin = Unasyn
Clavulanic Acid + Ticarcillin = Timentine Tazobactam + Piperacillin = Zosyn
