BIOC34
Human Physiology II
Midterm Examination 2024
Date: Friday March 13 2024; 5 to 7 PM (2 hours)
Instructor: Dr. Stephen Reid
Rooms: AA112 (students with last names "A" to "K").
Rooms: AC223 (students with last names "L" to "Z").

General Instructions

1. Complete the examination candidate form at the beginning of the exam and sign it when it is
collected during or after the exam. The candidate form is the first page of the exam prior to the
title page.

2. Clearly indicate your name and student number on the scantron sheet. Providing both your
name and student number is a pre-requisite to have your exam marked. If you don't provide both,
your grade will be zero.

3. If your name has changed, or you are using a name that differs from the official name under
which you are registered at U of T, please let me know. It is highly suspicious if a different name
is used without disclosure.

4. Mark the answers to the multiple choice questions on the scantron sheet. Make sure that you
return the scantron sheet and the questionnaire at the end of the exam.

5. Choose only one answer. Each question is worth 1 mark. There are 62 questions. The exam has
18 pages including the candidate form page.

6. Basic calculators and a ruler are permitted.

7. Do not wait until the exam is over to fill in the answers on the scantron sheet. Once time is
up there can be no more additions to the scantron. Filling in the scantron sheet after time is up
will automatically result in a grade of 0% on the exam. This is blatant cheating and is an offense
against the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters.

8. UTSC exam regulations prohibit the presence of electronic devices in an examination room.

The University of Toronto's Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters applies to all University of
Toronto Scarborough students. The Code prohibits all forms of academic dishonesty including,
but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and the use of unauthorized aids. Students violating the
Code may be subject to penalties up to and including suspension or expulsion from the
University.

1. Which of the following valves separates the left atria from the left ventricle?

a) The aortic valve.
b) The pulmonary valve.
c) The bicuspid valve.
d) The tricuspid valve.

2. The wave of depolarisation that travels along the conduction pathway of the heart is
slowed at which point?

a) The internodal pathways.
b) The AV node.
c) The Bundle of His.
d) The branch bundles.

3. Neurons have a stable resting potential but pacemaker cells continuously depolarise
between action potentials. This intrinsic depolarisation is most likely due to the:

a) Opening of Na+ channels and the acceleration of Na+ efflux.
b) Opening of K+ channels and the acceleration of K+ influx.
c) Closing of K+ channels and the slowing of K+ influx.
d) Closing of K+ channels and the slowing of K+ efflux.

4. Which of the following events contribute to the depolarisation that occurs during the
plateau phase of the cardiac action potential?

a) Opening of L-type Ca++ channels; Opening of Na+ channels.
b) Opening of Na+ channels; Closure of the inward-rectifying K+ channels.
c) Closure of the inward-rectifying K+ channels; Opening of L-type Ca++ channels.
d) Opening of the delayed–rectifying K+ channels; Opening of L-type Ca++ channels.

5. Which of the following occurs during phase zero (the large depolarisation) of the cardiac
action potential?

a) An increase in Ca++ permeability.
b) An increase in Na+ permeability.
c) A decrease in K+ permeability.
d) An increase in Ca+ permeability and a decrease in K+ permeability.
