04 Quiz 1
ESSAY: Read and understand the given questions and answer in no more than three (3) sentences
You may respond with a text or attachment (3 items x 5 points).
1. Why do you think registered nurses were hired to act as flight attendants during the early years?
In the early days of commercial aviation, registered nurses were hired as flight attendants
because their medical training prepared them to care for any passengers who became ill during
flights. I believe, being a registered nurse were an edge because historically, a flight attendant’s
job includes catering and reassuring passengers who were experiencing discomfort on the plane.
And a registered nurse could easily be trained to serve drinks or foods but their medical knowledge
is something that cannot be learned by other applicants in trainings in a matter of weeks.
2. What has led airline companies to hire untrained women to become flight attendants?
Today, airline companies hire untrained women to become flight attendants as long as they
pass the required trainings, medical examinations, and physical tests. This is because, upon the
outbreak of world war II wherein nurses were called to join the military to assist wounded and
injured soldiers, airlines during that time started to hire women who were not nurses which led
airlines companies today adapt to this idea.
3. Why is the role of flight attendants critical in ensuring the safety and security of the passengers?
Beyond safety and abnormal/emergency procedures, cabin crew members must manage
security-related events and medical situations and participate in the operator’s key management
programs, such as safety management systems. Training should encompass all these aspects. These
are just few of the role of flight attendants in ensuring the safety and security of the passengers
and this is critical because most of the time they’re working, it happens on air, during a flight. A
flight attendant’s knowledge during security and emergency situations on air is twice as difficult
if something similar happened on the ground because on air, there are no hospitals, no ambulance
to call. Its just the flight attendants and themselves only.
