eGFR: An Ethical Dilemma

, Introduction
❖ Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) has been considered the
best way of measuring kidney functions.
❖ Laboratories has since used mathematical equations in
estimating GFR rates instead of measuring.
❖ These estimates have been incorporated in laboratory
reports as eGFR instead of GFR.
❖ Commonly used estimation equations for eGFR are the CKD
MDRD and the CKDEPI (Girgin & Arici, 2023).
❖ Race was originally used to make these estimates as trials
demonstrate different levels of eGFR calculations across
races.
❖ The use of race has in calculating eGFR has since been a
subject of debate, causing an ethical dilemma.
