Body Movements
Define the following:
a) Cell- Cell is a structural and functional unit of all living
organisms.
b) Tissue- It is the group of similar cells with same kind of function.
c) Muscles- Muscular tissue that consists of muscles fibres due to
which it can contract and relax.
d) Bones- It forms the framework that supports the body. It also
anchors the muscles.
e) Cartilage- The bone like structure which is soft and elastic in
nature can be bent. This is present in the nose, ear.
What are joints?
Joints- The places where two parts of our body seem to be joined
together are called joints. Eg. Elbow, shoulder, neck, etc.
There are four types of joints:
1) Fixed Joints- These are the joints where the bones do not show any
movement. Eg. Joint between the upper jaw and the head, etc.
2) Ball and the socket joints- This joint allows movement in all
directions. In this joint, the rounded end of one bone fits into the
cavity (hollow space) of the other bone. Eg. Joint between the upper
arm and shoulder, joint between hip bone and thigh bone, etc.
3) Pivotal joint- In this joint, a cylindrical bone rotates in a ring. Eg.
Joint between the neck and head. It allows our head to move
forward, backward, right, and left.
4) Hinge joints- The joint which allows movement only in one plane.
Eg. Fingers, knee joint etc. The elbow also has a hinge joint that
allows only back and forth movement.

, What is ribcage?
Ribs are bones of the chest. There are 12 ribs on each side of the
chest. 12 pairs of ribs joining the chest bone and the backbone
together makes a rib cage that protects the heart and the lungs.
What are shoulder bones?
The shoulder bones are formed by the collar bone and the shoulder
blade.
What are pelvic bones?
The pelvic bones enclose the portion of our body below the stomach.
This is the part we sit on.
What is a skull?
Skull is made up of many bones joined together. It encloses and
protects our brain.
What is a backbone?
Backbone or vertebral column is made up of many small bones called
vertebrae extending from the base of the skull to the hips. The
backbone consists of 33 vertebrae. The ribcage is joined to these
bones.
What is a skeleton?
The bones in our body form a framework to give a shape to our body.
This framework is called the skeleton.
Note- Human skeleton is composed of 305 bones at birth. The
number of bones changes with age and decreases to
206 bones by adulthood after some bones have fused together.
Note- The X-Ray images of the human body show the shapes of the
bones in our body.
What are the functions of skeleton?
The functions of the skeleton are:
a) Skeleton forms the frame work of the body.
b) It provides shape and posture to the body.
c) It protects the delicate parts of the body against any injury.
