Screening frequency for PAP Screen age 21-65 years q 3 years with cytology OR Age
>30 Pap and HPV test no more often than q 5 years if done together and both normal
(negative)
HPV screening Is a Risk Stratifier:
A normal Pap and negative HPV test give a 99-100% assurance that cervical cancer is
not present and will not likely occur in next few years allowing less frequent screening
A positive HPV test and a normal Pap reflects increased risk for either 1) missed
disease or for the 2) subsequent development of CIN 2-3 and cancer requiring
increased surveillance
Guidelines for Adolescents & HPV Testing
HPV testing is not recommended for routine use with adolescents because they have
high rates HPV and these usually resolve without TX Burden of unnecessary dx & tx is
avoided If teen has Pap test abnormality > ASC-US, HPV testing may be done
