🇺🇸Unit 3: The Early
Republic🗽
Jefferson Democracy (where’s his crown?
That’s his bling!)
Jefferson’s victory in 1800 ushered in a long era of
Democratic-Republican dominance
Jefferson’s style of governance departed radically from predecessors:
○ “Republican simplicity” replaced the formality of the
Federalist era
Jefferson’s “agrarian republic” (agriculture-based country with
mostly local and small government)
○ Ideal citizen = yeoman farmer (Family farms, lives independently with
no assistance and on their land, self-sufficiency, contributing to their
country, had a stake in their country as they owned land)
○ Ideal society = rural communities comprised of small family
farms.
○ An abundance of fertile land made the USA suited to such a
society.
Jefferson promised a “wild and frugal government”
○ The government governs best that governs least
Jefferson adhered to this philosophy by:
○ Cutting taxes and paying off almost all federal debt.
