Motivational interviewing is a person-centered style of counseling. It involves
helping the clients examine their situation and develop their own guidelines for better health
(Khanfer et al., 2013). There are five major principles of motivational interviewing: expressing
empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, avoiding argument, and supporting
self-efficacy (van Wormer, 2007). The first three principles involve understanding how the client
has behaved previously. The last principle helps develop the intervention towards change.
