Term 1 of 48
In Oedipus' speech (245 - 314) he condemns the murder and anyone who might shield him. On
what condition does he call down a curse upon himself? Why is this ironic?

She reaches the conclusion that the role of fate and the gods in human existence are not
real because of the death of Polybus.

He says the are different from the others because these ones say that only the troubles we
inflict on yourself will hurt us most of all. He also says how if you are true to yourself you
will not worry about these horrors as much.

On the condition that the person or murderer will be exiled and will go unharmed. This is
ironic because it's almost as it he knows that he is the one who did it.

The irony that is hidden is that although he saved them, murder also caused the plague
again and the murder that happened was because of Oedipus killing the king/ his own
father.

Term 2 of 48
What curse does Oedipus fear that he has brought upon his daughters?

they are so stricken because he was once the man that saved them from all the bad things
and reversed the curse basically for their kingdom and now he is the reason that it all
happened again and they are still having a hard time understanding everything that they
just witnessed and learned about their own leader.

the general observation is that the Gods and faith are a powerful thing and can affect your
lives in so many different ways. They actually do believe what Jocasta did not believe at the
beginning of the novel.

Daughter of Zeus is Athena and the Triple shield against death is Apollo.

the curse he fears is that they will have just as bad a life as his because he is now being
exiled and that they may be just as cursed as him now. He fears for this a lot.

,Term 3 of 48
Whom does Oedipus curse in lines 269-276? Why does he curse the man?

The priest expresses confidence that Oedipus can be his kingdom's "savior" because he has
already saved the city once before so the priest is sure he can do it again.

He says that the plague has affected him more strongly than it has affected the people
appealing to him by saying that he grieves for the entire city instead of just having to worry
about himself. He has to worry about more people because he's the king.

He says this because he believes that there was no need for a public spectacle as we
learned when he arrived back with the news and wanted to tell Oedipus inside the castle.

He curses himself and he curses himself because he says "this great murderous ruin, this
man cursed to heaven, the man the deathless gods hates most of all".

Term 4 of 48
In an ardent speech (lines 168 - 244) the chorus addresses the gods, adding such titles as "Healer
of Delos" for Apollo. Who is called "Daughter of Zeus"? Who is "Triple shield against death"?

an example of foreshadowing is when they say he will end up being king, bc he does end
up being king only after he marries his mother.

Daughter of Zeus is Artemis and the Triple shield against death is Dionysus.

Daughter of Zeus is Athena and the Triple shield against death is Apollo.

the general observation is that the Gods and faith are a powerful thing and can affect your
lives in so many different ways. They actually do believe what Jocasta did not believe at the
beginning of the novel.

, Term 5 of 48
What command from Oedipus suggests that an obsession to know the circumstances of his birth
has overwhelmed his sense of justice?

The description that appeals strongly to the reader's sense of hearing is because a lot of
what is said is what they plague victims were saying and hearing when they got sick/hurt.

The chorus talks about gods such as Apollo, Hermes, and Dionysus. They are hoping that
one will have the answers to Oedipus birthplace and his mountain mother.

the communication is talking to him even though oedipus turned his back to him and
wouldn't or didn't want to listen.

The command is telling the shepherd that if he doesn't tell him what happened to him and
about his birth that he will be in grave trouble and could fear death.

Term 6 of 48
In what two ways is Creon related to Oedipus?

Jocasta rejoices at the news of Polybus death because that means the curse cannot be true.
This is said because the curse states that Oedipus is suppose to kill his father but his father
died from sickness.

the other way is by the blindness of joy because he said nothing else could bring him joy
anyways.

That human happiness is only really able to get if you are true to yourself and don't try to
fix things all the time on your own but let fate take a play in it as well.

Creon is related to Oedipus by being his brother-in-law because Oedipus married Jocasta
and also by being his nephew because Creon is Jocasta's brother and she is Oedipus' wife.
