A1. Personal Values
Recognition of personal values is vital for any leader. My values are honesty and
inclusivity.
As a leader, honesty will be my guiding principle. All decisions as a campus will be made
with this in mind. It is vitally important that all stakeholders understand that we are as honest and
transparent as possible when making and communicating any decision.
Honesty is important, but useless, without inclusivity. Whenever possible, I will include
all relevant stakeholders in the decision-making process. We will create a culture of
collaboration, where everyone’s voice is not only heard but considered. This will affect all
stakeholders, as they will be an integral part of decision-making; thereby reducing the amount of
resistance encountered when engaging in change.
The experiences that shaped my drive to be honest and inclusive come from being a part
of a school culture where those were not the norm. Without integrity and transparency, a culture
of distrust was born. Not only were the staff members distrustful, but that distrustful behavior
was modeled for students. Soon, rumors were key, and the truth was nonexistent in
communication between staff, families, students, and administration.
Not only were honesty and transparency absent, but inclusivity was limited. Stakeholders
were typically not included in decisions, leading to resistance at every point in the change
process. Because staff were not included in decision-making, they modeled the same behavior to
students, and trust and collaboration were no longer present in classrooms.
A2. Ethical Obligations
As a leader, I will be ethically obligated to have “integrity and always act in a trustworthy
and responsible manner,” and “commit to serving others before self” (Code of ethics: AASA).
