TEACHER LANGUAGE

This part of the assignment is set to enable us to assess your language grading and concept checking.

You must use direct speech, e.g.'OK everyone, listen very carefully because I'm going to tell you what to do next.
On the wall there are pictures of 12 animals. On these orange cards (hold up a card) are the names of the
animals. I'll give everyone a card with some blu-tack (show back of card with a blob of blu-tack). Take your card
and stick it to the correct animal picture. Juan, what are you going to do with your orange card?'

You might need to put in some predicted student responses for the vocabulary teaching part.

N.B. If you do not use direct speech, you will be required to resubmit the whole assignment.

Give word for word the language you could use for:

A) Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be concept checked,
Show how you would elicit, explain and concept check each of the three items.

1. Documentary –
Class, what is your favourite movie? (Everyone say the name of their favourite movie). Now, here is
a poster of another movie (MATERIAL 1.1). Who is this movie about? (Arvind Kejriwal). Good. Is he
in the movie too? (yes). Correct. Is this movie made using real-life recorded events? (yes). Good.
And a movie made using real-life recorded events is called…(someone might then be able to offer
the word “documentary” if not, I will tell them). These types of movies are called “Documentary
movies”. Repeat after me – “Documentary”.
Concept Check:
1. Have you seen the latest Avengers movie? (yes). Is that a documentary? (no).
2. I will record the morning assembly on my camera and use it to make a movie about this school.
Would that be a documentary? (yes).

2. Closing Down –
Okay, class. Now look at this picture (MATERIAL 1.2). What is this picture showing? ( A closed shop).
Good but the shop is not closed yet. It will be closed in the future. Right now, the shop owner is in
the process of...(someone might then be able to offer the word “closing down the shop”, if not, I will
tell them). The shop owner is in the process of closing down the shop. Repeat after me – “Closing
down”.
Concept Check:
I need a suggestion from you all. I have a restaurant that is not profitable anymore. I don’t want to
run it anymore. What do you suggest me to do? (Close it down). That’s right. I’ll start closing down
the restaurant.

3. Mainstream –
You all are doing great. Let’s look at another picture (MATERIAL 1.3). Where is the boy in the picture
going? (school). Correct. Does every child need to go to school? (yes). Is that common? (yes)..
Another word for things that are common is “mainstream” (someone might say “mainstream”, if
