UPDATE GRADED A++
ABA definition
Science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied to improve
socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables
responsible the improvement in behavior
ABA focus
make meaningful improvement in important behavior and to achieve an analysis of the
factors responsible for that improvement
Mentalism
Approach that assumes an 'inner' dimension exists that differs from behavioral
dimension and this can either directly cause or at least mediate some forms of behavior,
if not all
Characteristics of ABA
Applied, Behavioral, Analytic, Technological, Conceptually systematic, Effective,
Generality
Independent variable
Variable that is changed or manipulated
Dependent variable
Variable that is measured or observed
Determinism
, Philosophical aspect of ABA that behavior follows general rules and laws and does not
happen randomly
Empiricism
Objective observation of phenomena of interest
Experimental analysis of behavior (EAB)
Natural science approach to studying behavior founded by BF Skinner
Replication
Repeating a study to confirm results
Parsimony
Ruling out simple, logical explanations before considering more complex ones
Philosophic doubt
Continually questioning the truthfulness and validity of scientific theory
Methodological behaviorism
Version of behaviorism that accepts the contention that overt behavior should be
psychology's subject matter but is willing to speculate about internal causes of behavior
such as various mental and physiological states
Radical behaviorism
Behaviorism that attempts to understand all human behavior including public and
private events
Topography
Depicting what a behavior looks like, form
Rule-governed behavior
