HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The manga town of evening calm by ‘Fumiyo
Kouno’ was based on an event on 6th august
1945 Nuclear Bombing in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. The manga begins from the year
1955.
A story of young girl named Minami 23years
old whose father and two sisters had died in
the bombing. Minami, her mother and her
younger brother were the only survivals and
they have been forcefully relocated from the
main city of Hiroshima to Atomic slump.
The story opens by showing Minami in her
office she had taken up a job to support her
mother and her brother has been evacuated
due to the dropping of the bombs the entire
city has been toxic, being polluted by the
radiations of poisoning where lots of young
, children have been sent away to different
places in Japan. Minami’s brother has been
sent to her aunt’s place known as Hito.
Themes
Theme 1: POVERTY
The manga shows the poverty, the
impoverish conditions in which Minami and
her mother lives, we see them living in one
room house which is also falling apart the
roof is been broken, the floors.
Minami does not have proper shoes here
symbolism and shoes represents Minami’s
poverty. They are saving in order to meet
her brother during summer.
Theme 2: ROMANTISM
Minami had romantism with her fellow
colleague where he gifts her with two
presents – first with bamboo slippers made
by his grandmother and second is a
handkerchief. These two gifts represent a
symbol of love.
