Introduction
Oxidation-Reduction Reactions
An oxidation-reduction reaction, or redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which
electrons are transferred from one reactant to another.
Zn ( s ) +Cu 2+ ( aq ) ⟶ Zn 2+ ( aq ) +Cu( s )
In this process, zinc atoms are oxidized (they lose electrons) and copper ions are
reduced (they gain electrons).
Redox half-reactions:
Zn ( s ) ⟶ Zn 2+ ( aq ) +2e -
Cu 2+ ( aq ) +2e - ⟶ Cu( s )
Zn ( s ) +Cu 2+ ( aq ) + 2e - ⟶ Zn 2+ ( aq ) +Cu ( s ) +2e -
Oxidation is the loss of electrons, and the gain of electrons is called reduction.
Zn is called the reducing agent because it donates electrons, causing Cu 2+ to be
reduced. Cu2+ is called the oxidizing agent because it accepts electrons, causing Zn
to be oxidized.
