Continuous Probability
Distribution test questions
and answers 2024
The probability distribution of a random variable that has an infinite
number of possible values that can be represented by an interval on a
number line.
Normal Distribution
A continuous probability distribution for a random variable x.
Normal Curve
The graph of a normal distribution
Properties of Normal Distribution
1. Mean, median, mode are equal.
2. The normal curve is bell-shaped and is symmetric about the mean.
3. The total area under the normal curve is equal to 1.
4. The normal curve approaches, but never touches, the x-axis as it
extends farther and farther away from the mean.
5. Between μ − σ and μ + σ (in the center of the curve), the graph curves
downward. The graph curves upward to the left of μ − σ and to the right
of μ + σ.
Inflection Points
The points in which the curve changes from curving upward to curving
downward. Always one standard deviation from the mean.
Probability Density Function (pdf)
1. The total area under the curve is equal to 1
2. The function can never be negative
Standard Normal Distribution
The normal distribution with a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1.
The total area under the curve is 1.
Z-score
, A measure of position that indicates the number of standard deviations a
value lies from the mean.
Mean on a Bell Curve
Gives the location of the line of symmetry.
Standard Deviation on a Bell Curve
Describes the spread of the data.
Standard Normal Deviation
This distribution has a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1.
Standard Normal Table
A table that gives the area for a standard normal curve. Ex: If Z = 1.65,
find the row 1.6 and the column .05 to find area.
