- Spring 1649
- Council of State would function as a government and would be annually elected by the
Rump Parliament.
- Of its 41 members only 19 swore loyalty to the Commonwealth (Oath of Engagement).
This would suggest that it wasn't particularly radical.
- Leveller ideas of universal suffrage not implemented.
What was the Diggers Unrest and when and where did it take place?
- April 1649
- Diggers occupy St George's hill in protest of rising poverty and inflation. They claim
that property ownership was a Norman invention.
What happened in May 1649?
-5 Levellers in the Army were shot and killed for treason. This shows that Cromwell is
more interested in maintaining control rather than making political and cultural reforms.
- Lilburne and Overton (Leveller leaders) arrested for opposing the Rump.
- Lilburne attempts to reissue the Agreement of the People. He was later acquitted in
return for signing the Oath of Engagement.
Evaluation:
Events show Cromwell is becoming more conservative as Lilburne had fought in the
NMA with Cromwell during the war.
