Epiphysis
The end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft.
Diaphysis
Shaft of a long bone.
Articular cartilage
Hyaline cartilage covers ends of bones in synovial joints.
Cancellous (spongy) bone
Contains little spaces like a sponge. Reticular tissue that makes up most of the
volume of a long bone; includes red bone marrow, which manufactures most
red blood cells.
Epiphyseal plate (growth plate)
,Area of hyaline cartilage that separates the marrow spaces of the epiphysis and
diaphysis.
Epiphyseal line
Remnant of the epiphyseal plate, seen in adult bones.
Red marrow cavities
Where red marrow is found; Location of hematopoietic tissue -- trabecular
cavities in spongy bone, head of the femur and humerus in long bones, diploe in
flat bones.
Compact bone
Hard, dense bone tissue that is beneath the outer membrane of a bone.
Medullary cavity
Central, hollowed-out area in the shaft of a long bone.
Endosteum
Membranous lining of the hollow cavity of the bone.
, Yellow marrow
Soft, fatty material found in the medullary cavity of long bones.
Periosteum
A dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the
surfaces of the joints.
Long bones
Bones of the arms and legs, longer than they are wide.
Ex. humerus, tibia, radius, ulna, fibula, femur, etc.
Short bones
Bones of the wrist and ankles.
Ex. carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, tarsals, metatarsals.
Flat bones
The end part of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft.
