Entry #1: Personal Reflection - Lifespan Development
Topic: Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development
a) Explanation of the Stage: Identity vs. Role Confusion
Erik Erikson’s fifth stage of psychosocial development, Identity vs. Role Confusion,
occurs during adolescence (ages 12-18). At this stage, individuals are focused on
exploring their sense of self and developing a personal identity. This process involves
experimenting with different roles, beliefs, and values. Success in this stage leads to a
strong sense of identity and direction in life, while failure results in confusion about
one’s role in society and personal goals.
Key Outcome: A coherent sense of self and the ability to stay true to oneself amidst
social pressures.
b) Personal Developmental Experience
During high school, I participated in a national debate competition, which required me to
present arguments on social justice issues. Initially, I struggled with public speaking and
doubted my ability to represent my team effectively. This period coincided with a time
when I was questioning my career aspirations and values. Preparing for the competition
forced me to critically examine my beliefs and articulate them confidently.
