systolic pressure
Blood pressure in the arteries during contraction of the ventricles.
diastolic pressure
Blood pressure that remains between heart contractions.
We used to refer to Heart Failure as Congested Heart Failure
however we are trying to get away from using CHF because heart failure is more
than just Congestion in the heart as you will see in coming slides.
Heart failure happens when the heart cannot
pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs in your body. Heart
failure is a serious condition
Function of the Heart
,The overall strength and health of the heart muscle affects how well it pumps
blood.
Function of the Heart
The heart functions as a pump. It is responsible for delivering oxygen and
nutrients to the organs of the body via arterial circulation and removing the waste
products of metabolism via venous circulation
This is accomplished by the heart muscle contracting, called systole, and relaxing,
called diastole. The overall strength and health of the heart muscle affects how
well it pumps blood.
What is heart failure?
Impaired heart function; the ventricle is unable to maintain a cardiac output
sufficient to meet the metabolic needs of the body
Heart failure/Pump failure, is the inability of the heart to function properly; the
ventricles are not able to maintain cardiac output
because it is a poor pump or there is poor filling
It does not allow adequate Cardiac output to meet the demands of the body
which are blood, nutrients and oxygen.
Systole
Contraction of the heart
, Diastole
relaxation phase of the heartbeat
Heart Failure
Most common cause of hospitalization in patients over 65
Increasing in incidence
5.7 million adults in the U.S.
550,000 new cases each year are diagnosed
About half of people who develop heart failure die within 5 years of diagnosis.
African Americans affected more than Euro-Americans d/t more risk factors
From the CDC (2017) Heart Failure Fact Sheet:
About 5.7 million adults in the United States have heart failure.1
One in 9 deaths in 2009 included heart failure as contributing cause.1
About half of people who develop heart failure die within 5 years of diagnosis.1
