Accreditation
is the longest established and most widely known process for the external evaluation of
healthcare services.
Appearance
An image that portrays an individual, hopefully one that displays a trustworthy and
respectable person in a health care setting. An MLAs appearance should display
cleanliness and confidence, often follows dress code.
Accountability
To be answerable for services that an individual is trained, qualified, and hired to
perform. An attitudinal and moral issue.

Communication Skills
The means in which information is exchanged or transmitted; one of the most important
processes that takes place in the healthcare system.- sender and receiver
Competence
A standardized requirement for an individual to perform a job properly, in a way that
guarantee the standard of care that a facility provides. Can be evaluated in regular
intervals to ensure it is maintained.
Consent
The process by which a patient allows a medical procedure to occur, necessary to have
the patient understand the procedure fully.
Continuing Education
The maintenance and improvement of the MLA's level of competence and field of
knowledge. Through seminars/courses, reading appropriate literature, sharing
knowledge with colleagues.
CSMLS
Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science; the national certifying body for
medical laboratory technologists and assistants.
Dress code
For MLAs, this varies between facility but generally a neat, clean uniform and/or lab
coat.
Honesty
In health care, honesty is needed to make sure the health and lives of people are taken
care of by a cooperative effort of a team. Restrict all medical information provided to the
patient to the instructions of a procedure.

Personal Hygiene
Important for appearance and for safety. Neat clean hair (long hair pulled back), clean
fingernails, makeup that is not overdone, minimal jewelry.

blood for transfusions (by donation), or to remove blood for therapeutic purposes.

Responsibility
For a health care worker, it is to make a conscious effect to consider all duties and
professional behaviour and a direct application of this knowledge to a present health-
care situation.
Safety
Actions/behaviour must ensure your safety and the patient's safety. It is both a legal and
ethical issue, and is ensured by clear guidelines and procedures by the workplace.
Active listening
Taking positive steps through feedback to ensure that the listener is interpreting what
the speaker is saying exactly as the speaker intended.
Communication
A skill by the means of which information is exchanged or transmitted; one of the most
important processes that takes place in the healthcare system.
Communication Barriers
Prejudices or personalized filters that become obstructions to hearing and
understanding what has been said and are frequent causes of miscommunication.
Courtesy
The showing of politeness in one's attitude and behaviour toward others.
Kinesis
Non verbal communication including characteristics of body motion and language such
as facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact.
