Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
After going through the entirety of unit 1 in this course book and using the checklist from
unit 10, I can note that this course book has both informal and formal activities and reports
for the students to do. There are also many articles and this course book is very well laid
out and has a good structure plan. Everything is set out in a very orderly and logical way,
making it easy to use and is structured in a way that will take students through more and
more difficult work at a gradual pace. In the beginning we start with learning grammar and
progressively go through the course book which ends with exploring the various types of
English language used throughout the world. This course book provides a good amount of
focused practice and recycles the vocabulary well, which we know is vital for students to
retain what they have learned. This course book also provides many revision activities that
can be used to check the students understanding of the content, context and the topic of
globalization. I was in search of the teacher’s book but could not come across it, I suppose
it would be possible that this is in a different section of the course book.
This course book provides a variety of activities that students can use to work through
individually or in pairs which is fantastic. There are ample articles, diagrams and pictures, as
well as materials that are clearly laid out. It targets all language areas as well as the four
skills required in learning a language. There is a vast amount of activities that would
challenge advanced students – these include listening activities, writing reports and
reading etc. Listening and reading texts are centred around globalization, with topics of an
appropriate nature and therefore should not cause any problems regarding religious
beliefs and cultural backgrounds. Judging by unit 1, this book should provide advanced
students with a good challenge as topics are both interesting to the students as well as
stimulating.
While I do find this course book to have a variety of excellent activities and exercises that
incorporate practice and discussions, I did not see any grammar or vocabulary lists or
references. I would like to have seen a test section – again, this could be further on in the
full book or at the back of this course book, however, there is no mention of this or pricing
of this course book, which can be quite exorbitant.
In conclusion, ideally, I would like to see the remainder of this course book to check for test
pages first, however, from what I have seen thus far, I would use this book to teach my
students. The reason I would use this book is because it seems to be very well thought out
and is designed in a way that is challenging and fun for the students. It is easy to use,
colourful and progresses as you move along through the course. The content is user
friendly and appropriate for this level of student.
