DEFINITION:
Sudden and short-term weakness of facial muscles of one side is known as
bell’s palsy.
CAUSES:
o Unknown
o Swelling and inflammation of 7 cranial nerve or facial nerve
o Viral infections (cold sores and genital herpes, chicken pox and
shingles, mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus, German measles, mumps,
flu)
EFFECTS:
Weakness of facial muscles
Face droop
One sided smile
Bell’s phenomenon (eye moved upward when try to close eye)
Drooling of saliva
Lacrimal secretions
Pain around the jaw and ear on affected side
Decrease taste sensations
