Short-term model (12-20 sessions)
Goals of the Trauma Narrative
Desensitize the child to traumatic reminders and thereby decreasing avoidance and
hyperarousal
Enable the child to integrate the traumatic experience into the totality of the rest of the
child's life
Child and family will see the trauma is only one part of the child's life experience, rather
than being the defining aspect of the child's life.
Creating the Trauma Narrative
Goal = unpair thoughts, reminders, or discussions of the traumatic event, from
overwhelming negative emotions such as terror, horror, extreme helplessness, or rage.
Over the course of several sessions, the child is encouraged to describe more and more
details of what happened before, during and after the traumatic event, as well as the
child's thoughts and feelings during these times.
Children can write or draw their Trauma Narrative.
Allow child to move at their own pace.
As the Trauma Narrative is discussed over several sessions, the child will typically
experience progressively less extreme emotional reactions and physiological reactivity.
