What was World War I?
- World War I was known as the Great War
- A war between Central and Entente(Allied) powers
- It was the first conflict of its scale with all continents involved
The Underlying Causes

The development of :
•Machine Guns, using them worsened the existing stalemate
•Poison Gas (April 22,1915), Chlorine gas used by Germans caused blindness, choking, burns, and death
• Tanks (September 5, 1916), the British Mark 1 was used in the battle of Somme
• Airplanes (1914), were deployed to gather info
• Zeppelins, used by the German and were gas filled balloons used for bombing
• Submarines(September 5, 1914), German U-boats

Competition between two or more countries to increase power by building size and quality in weapons

The deep devotion to pride one’s nation (leading to competition

•Belief that Slavic people should all be united
•Russia considered the mother country ready to support all other smaller slavic countries
•Serbia, and Bosnia no longer wanted to be under Austria-Hungary
