Maria Salome Skłodowska-Curie, known simply as Marie Curie, was a Polish and naturalised-
French physicist and chemist.she were born on 7 th November 1867.In Warsaw Poland
Marie Curie is remembered for her discovery of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to
finding treatments for cancer. This work continues to inspire our charity’s mission to drive
fundamental change in end of life care so that everyone can have the best possible quality of life to
the end.
In 1903, Curie won the Nobel Prize in Physics for her research of radiation phenomena. She was
also the first woman in France to attain a PhD in Physics, and the first woman to teach at the
Sorbonne. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize in chemistry for the discovery of polonium and
radium.
The Curie’s had two daughters. Irene, the oldest, was born in 1897 two years after Pierre and
Marie married. Daughter Eve was born seven years later.
