1.1 Definition of term professional
In HR, professionalism refers to the ability of an individual to portray competence in offering
value to the shareholders of the organization in an ethical manner while giving considerations
on the impact of their actions in the society (CIPD, 2022). Professionalism is the ability to
demonstrate skills and expertise and knowing how and when to apply the knowledge in their
line of specialization. For an individual to be considered professional, they must demonstrate
competence, integrity, honor, leadership, fairness, spirit and enthusiasm and have the public’s
interest at heart (Baker, 2022).
Competence is the having sufficient knowledge, judgement, skill and strength to perform a
task efficiently. A person of integrity has strong moral principles and is dedicated to acting in
