Positive Behavior Support

Functional Academics
Focuses on basic educational concepts that may be useful in daily life, such as basic
reading using survival sight words, basic math involving money and time, basic writing
like name, address and phone number.
Transition Planning
Includes accessing community services, employability skills and daily life skills.
Instructional Effectiveness
Model, teach, feedback, practice, evaluate.
Peer Mediated Instruction
Varied academic & language abilities work together in pairs & small groups toward a
common goal. Effective in promoting higher levels of language and academic learning
and social interaction(essential components: cooperative incentives; group rewards;
individual accountability; task structures)
Mental Retardation
intellectual functioning that is below 75 and possesses limitations in 2+ adaptive
behavior skill areas, with onset in childhood. Severe MR is in the range of 20-40.
Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
1965 - Provided federal funding to improve the education of those in poverty. Prompted
initiatives for funding special education.
Amending or modifying an IEP
Parents and the district may agree to do so with a written document, in lieu of a meeting
(IDEA 2004)
Early Intervening Services (IDEA 2004)
To support at-risk students and avoid referral to SPED services and support these
students in general education (Different from "Early Intervention Services)
Transition Services (IDEA 2004)
Start no later than age 16 (14 in the State of WI).
Access to and involvement in general ed curriculum
Must be addressed in IEP no matter how severe the disability.
Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
Services will be developed for the child and provided at no cost to the family.
Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)
National organization that represents the needs of students with exceptionalities by
providing a great amount of information, including a Code of Ethics (available on their
website).
Characteristics of Collaborative Team Members

Assistive Technology
Considered a "Related Service," assistive technology is included in the Present Levels
of Performance and Related Services portion of the IEP. Ex. Use of computer programs
State Assessments
All students should participate in statewide assessments (IDEA), with the same
accommodations and modifications per IEP.
Other Health Impaired
Limited strength, vitality or alertness, including heightened alertness to environmental
stimuli that adversely affects education performance.
Earliest Learning Experiences
Motoric: gathering enormous amount of data through motor development.
Best Practice for Having Parents at IEP Meeting
Ask them to share their expectations. To develop goals based on performance at
school, home and in the community and build collaboration toward the student's final
goals.
Functional Curriculum
Includes life skills and teaches them both in the classroom , at home and in the
community. Requires academic skills be taught in a more practical manner.
Parent-Teacher Conference Attendance
Encouraged by early positive contact and a brief reminder with a clear agenda sent prior
to the meeting date.
