Stroke
Definition
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or
reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. This can
cause brain cells to die within minutes. Strokes are a medical emergency requiring
prompt treatment to minimize brain damage and other complications.
Types of Stroke:
1. Ischemic Stroke:
Caused by a blockage in a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain.
The most common type (about 87% of all strokes).
Subtypes:
Thrombotic stroke: Blood clot forms in a brain artery.
Embolic stroke: Blood clot or debris forms elsewhere in the body and travels to
the brain.
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke:
Caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain.
Leads to bleeding in or around the brain.
Common causes: Hypertension, aneurysms, or trauma.
3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA):
Often called a "mini-stroke."
Temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain.
Symptoms resolve within 24 hours but signal a risk of future strokes.
4. Cryptogenic Stroke:
A stroke with no clear cause despite testing.
5. Brain Stem Stroke:
