Milady Chapter 12 - Basics of Chemistry
1. Chemistry: Is the science that deals with the composition, structures,
and prop- erties of matter and how matter changes under different
conditions.
2. Organic Chemistry: The study of substances that contain the element
carbon, which is in all living things. Examples are gases, plastics,
fertilizers.
3. Organic: means safe and natural but not all substances are
natural, healthy or safe.
4. Inorganic Chemistry: The study of substances that do not contain the
element carbon but may contain the element hydrogen. Examples
include: pure water, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and hair relaxers.
They do not burn because they do not contain carbon.
5. Matter: Any substance that occupies space and has mass (weight). All
matter is made up of chemicals.
6. Element: The smallest form of chemical matter. It cannot be broken
down into a simpler substance without a loss of identity.
7. Chemical-free: There is no such thing as a product.
8. Atom: The basic unit of matter with a nucleus at the center
surrounded by negatively charged electrons.
9. Molecule: A chemical combination of 2 or more atoms in definite
(fixed) propor- tions.
10.Name 2 kinds of molecules: 1. Elemental
2. Compound
11.Elemental molecule: A molecule containing two or more atoms of
the same element in definite (fixed) proportions. Ex. oxygen.
12.Compound molecule: Chemical combination of two or more atoms of
different elements in definite (fixed) proportions. Ex. Sodium Chloride
(NaCl) or common table salt.
13.Name 2 types of chemistry: 1. Organic
2. Inorganic
14. Name the 3 states of matter: 1. Solid
2. Liquid
3. Gas
15.Solid: A is matter that is rigid and has a fixed shape and volume.
Example: brush or ice.
16.Liquid: A is matter that has definite volume but takes the
shape of its container. Example: bleach, shampoo, or water.
17.Gas: A is matter with no fixed volume or shape and takes the
shape and volume of its container. It can never be liquid at normal

temperature or pressure. Example: hairspray, mousse, or propane.
