, DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER 2
Abstract
Dissociative identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder) is thought to be a
complex psychological condition that is likely caused by many factors, including severe trauma
during early childhood usually extreme, repetitive physical, sexual, or emotional abuse (Cohen,
Berzoff, & Elin, 1995, p. 28). In this essay I will first provide background information on DID, and
identify and define the terminology commonly associated with the disorder. Second, I will discuss
the symptoms, in addition to causes of the disorder. Third, I will discuss the diagnosis and treatment
of DID. And lastly, I will provide a real life case study of an individual living with such an aggressive
disorder.
