Nasal Tip
Velum
• aka Soft palate muscular part of the palate posterior to the hard palate
• 1/3 of entire palate
Adenoid
•Mass of lymphoid tissue
•Located on posterior pharyngeal wall, just behind the velum
•More prominent in children than in adults
•Children have veloadenoidal closure; adults have velopharyngeal closure
Choana
funnel-shaped opening at back of nasal cavity that leads to the nasopharynx; one on
either side of vomer
Incisive Foramen
•Just behind the central incisors and alveolar ridge
•Is the starting point of embryological development of lip and palate
median raphe (palatine raphe)
- aka median raphe; line from incisive foramen to uvula
- A "raphe" is a seam in an organ or tissue; typically marking line where 2 halves fused
in embryo
nasal bridge
Bony structure between the eyes & corresponds to the middle nasofrontal suture
hard palate
•2/3 of entire palate
•Serves as roof of mouth and and nasal floor
•Forms palatal vault
uvula
•Teardrop-shaped structure that attaches to and hangs from, distal aspect of the velum
at midline
•Made up of mucosa, glandular, and adipose tissue
•Very vascular tissue
•Does not contribute to VP closure; no known function
palatine tonsils
alveolar ridge
bony support for teeth
anterior faucial pillar
posterior faucial pillar
dorsum of the tongue
top surface of the tongue
ventral surface
under side of the tongue
, incisive suture
hamulus
lateral pterygoid plate
medial pterygoid
vomer bone
premaxilla
•Triangular-shaped bone
•Bordered by the two incisive sutures and the incisive foramen
•Contains all four maxillary incisors (central and lateral)
maxilla, palatine process
transverse palatine suture
horizantal plate of palatine bone
posterior nasal spine
the nasal spine that is formed by the union of processes of the two palatine bones and
projects between the choanae.
ala base
ala rim
cupid's bow
tubercle
columella
philtral ridges
philtrum
nasal bone
anterior nasal spine
sphenoid sinus
perpendicular plate of ethmoid
vomer
- midline structure that separates the nostrils
- perpendicular structure that fits into the medial palatine suture groove
Passavant's ridge
•Bulge, shelf-like ridge of muscle on the posterior pharyngeal wall during speech; occurs
in some normal and abnormal speakers
Velar dimple
• Where levator veli palatini muscles interdigitate; is visible during phonation or oral
surface of velum
Levator Veli Palatini
Sling action pulling velum up and back
Tensor Veli Palatini
Opens eustachian tube during swallowing
Musculus Uvulae
Forms velar eminence on nasal side of velum, Adds bulk to midline to help with closure
Superior Constrictor
Constricts (purse string) pharyngeal walls against velum
Palatopharyngeus
Pulls lateral pharyngeal walls upward and medially, narrowing pharynx
Palatoglossus
