1. Causes of war
- Economic, ideological, political, territorial and other causes
- Short and long term causes
2. Overview

Main causes of WW1
Militarism (when a country builds up its military)(arms race and Naval building) (made joining the
military mandatory)(propaganda over how powerful countries military is)
Alliances: Political alliances, Trade alliances, Defensive military alliances, Offensive alliances.
Encirclement is having enemy alliances on opposite sides which Germany feared of France and Russia vs
Germany would be detrimental. 2 front wars are impossible to win.
Industrialization: England used raw materials to construct manufactured items like tables as an example.

Caused militarization
King wanted to colonize countries because they only recently became a country
German Naval laws increased the military spending by 73%
Britain increased in technology due to not being able to make as many soldiers as Russia
Otto Von Bibmark unified Germany and created a web of defensive alliances without anyone knowing
who they were allied with making them more dangerous
Otto Von Bismarck “Blood and Iron” Blood: spill blood for resources. Iron: Industrialism.
Anything Germany would do would affect England which scared England.
Urbanization: Technologically developing in your country, having powerful cities.
Germany became so mechanized they didn't need as much farming meaning they built cities.
Russia is struggling to feed its people due to being such a massive country.

Imperialism
Idea of acquiring colonies outside of the country. When a strong or core country takes over a periphery or
weak country. Making money for mom. Making money for the motherland by using periphery countries.
Britain and France were powerful colonial powers => Used Imperialism.

Germany's items gets taxed due to most countries not wanting to buy its items due to them being taxed
because they are being imported.

Franco prussian war => Unified country
Germany attacks France to take over Africa because they had one before even being a unified country.

England needs more consumers because they have so many factories.
Asia has many people so Britain plans to sell manufactured items to Asia. Tariffs = When one sells a
product to a country and taxes it for a higher price. Which is a for of protectionism

Industrialization
Mother of industrialization => Britain
Britain has no resources so it begins to colonize

Nationalism
Nationalism is when you believe that your country is the best and the people are devoted to it.

1. How do we differentiate between the Long Term and Short Term causes of
World War I?
Long term causes which started in the late 18th century which carried
onto the 19th century which piled up. Short term causes are events which
came up right before the events of WW1 between 1900-1914.
2. What is the acronym we use for the causes of the First World War?
MAIIN
3. What is Militarism?
Militarism is when a country grows its army or militerises it which causes
other countries to in turn also grow their armies.
4. How can you say it affects tensions?
It makes other countries panic knowing that other countries are growing
in military strength which could mean that the other country is either
preparing to attack or defend. This creates tension as the other
countries do not want to be invaded so they grow their armies

Alliance unites countries to work together.

Being allied with multiple countries.

Factories, and production of manufactured products. More land and
factories are needed for production. Product needs to be sold. Taxing is
created for countries who try to import their products.
4. What is the purpose of imperialism? How did this affect tensions,
especially prior to the outbreak of WWI?
The idea of collecting colonies. Which is when a core country colonizes a
periphery country. Making money for mom

Belief that your country is the greatest and supporting it to the very end
such as germany Blood and iron.


The balkan crisis (The balkan wars)

Italy is weak and attacks the Ottoman Empire for the colony of Tripoli. Italy wins, proving that the
Ottoman empire is too weak to defend itself.

Bosnia

Austria-Hungary owns Bosnia

Archduke planning to travel to Bosnia. Serbia is angered by this and has a terrorist group called the black
hand. They are hard core Serbian Nationalists believing they are at the top of the Bulkans. They plan to
kill the Archduke for revenge.

WW1 was a war of attrition
